O Amor da Rua

Duration 60 min (aprox.) | Age rating: 6+ | Single price 2€ (Buy Ticket)

TBA – Teatro do Bairro Alto | Main Auditorium

14 and 16 July | fri 19h00 and sun 20h30

Amor da Rua is an ode to those who live in the breach, dancing between worlds, breaking the pattern and subverting in the chill of time.
This work proposes to reinvent affections for invisible people by building doors to the openness of the street, that place of astonishment, that place of the unexpected.
It is a movement towards the other. In search of the other as mystery, as desire, the other as hell.

Conception and Direction Marcelo Castro

Creator Interpreters Francisco Thiago Cavalcanti and Marcelo Castro

Special Participation Victória dos Santos

Artistic Collaboration Gaya de Medeiros, Gustavo Ciríaco and João Fiadeiro

Marcelo Castro is a scene artist. He is currently investigating walking as an aesthetic practice. He is interested in the poetics of space, encounter, and chance. In the theater, he developed his work in partnership with several artists and theater companies. He was a founding member of Grupo Espanca! where he remained for 13 years, acting, and directing.

POOF

Duration 1h15 min (aprox.)

Culturgest | Culturgest Garage

6 and 8 July, 20h30

Everyone is briefly suspended from the floor, simultaneously going up and coming down. A disappearance of the self occurs whilst suspended and our hope not to return to the ground appears

‘POOF’ hypnotises itself through continually shifting its ground. Shapeshifting between fictioning, labouring and dancing, the work invokes a slippery place of (non) arrival in the body as a tool to disappear.

Through a practice of minding and mining our presence, we attend to the periphery by putting our attention into drag. ‘POOF’ behaves as a mirage dancing from gesture to jump and dwells on the ephemerality of the dance whilst rhythmically reminding us of our tethers to memories and histories that we feel but don’t know

It is a work built and fuelled on notions of not naming in order to see. ‘POOF’ is a word used to describe a sudden disappearance or in British slang, it is a term to describe an effeminate homosexual

Connor is a performer and dance maker born and raised in the northeast of England. They’re background in movement stems from their studies in martial arts, breakdance and most prominently Latin and ballroom dances. Their practice is shaped through various intersections of performance from choreographic and movement research to texts, interviews, and archives. In their own dances they often work with the notion of people as an already existing choreography, looking at how to generate a collective energetic event departing from the hope in which dance instils within them. They are currently investigating how to disappear and reappear in the act of dancing…

The tragedy is rather distant and brusque, as if poking fun at the protagonist. The spatial arrangement raised the question of commitment. Their medium: sited awareness. Io non credo a nulla, credo soltanto che sai un bene tradire, credo che sai bene trasgredire qualcosa negli ordini. Or what precisely it is that they drive? Dominar o mercado espectacular. É aqui que se faz a prova de vida? She’szzzz seizing something though.*

This site-specific work is part of the choreographic investigation “The Spontaneous Breath of Enthusiasm”, driven by the threefold Ancient Greek concept of enthusiasm: “In”, “Theo”, and “Asthma” which combine to mean “inner breath of God”.
Ibarretxe adopts this definition, changes the gender, and transforms it into “Inner Blow of the Goddess”, as in the engine that starts (or activates) bodies after times of mourning and grief.

Concept and direction María Ibarretxe del Val

Collaboration and performers Lucas Damiani and Victor Lattaque

Artistic accompaniment Carolina Mendoça and Silvana Ivaldi

María Ibarretxe is a visual and performing artist who combines various mediums including film, sound, installation and choreography. Her live performances and installations simulate cinematographic experiences in which the audience becomes part of the action. Her work is driven fundamentally by artistic research–inspired by the culture and context of each individual project.
She studied drama art in Basque Country and direction at the EICTV/Cuba. In 2002 she co-funded with Alaitz Arenzana the artistic collective Sra Polaroiska, obtaining awards such as Gure Artea for best creative activity in Basque Country 2017, Ertibil 2012, Choreographic Contest of Madrid 2012 or INJUVE 2003 (Ministry of Culture of Spain). They were associated artists in Azkuna Zentroa 2019-2021. Parallel, Ibarretxe collaborated with Koen de Preter in Belgium, Renate Keerd in Estonia and Miriam Sedacca in Japan.
Since 2014, Ibarretxe has developed a project-process that reflects on states of mourning throughout different residencies in Belgium, South Korea, Japan, up state New York and Kurdistan Irak.

PACAP 6 Presentations

6, 8 and 9 of July | Culturgest (Inside Out)

14 to 16 and 21 to 23 of July | TBA-Teatro do Bairro Alto (8 Works)

After an intense creative process, we arrived at the public presentations of the projects of each participant in this sixth edition of PACAP – Performing Arts Advanced Programme, which is curated by the artist duo Sofia Dias & Vítor Roriz. In this edition, the presentations take place in two different cycles, in two cultural institutions in Lisbon: a first cycle within the scope of the “Inside Out” program by Culturgest and a second cycle at TBA-Teatro do Bairro Alto, with the program “8 Works PACAP 6 / Forum Dança”.

Culturgest | Inside Out
Four projects developed with unconventional spaces in mind are presented, namely outdoor spaces (gardens, street, open-air auditorium, etc.).
Projects of María Ibarretxe (ES), Silvana Ivaldi (PT/IT), Connor Scott (UK) and Estrellx Supernova (EUA/GUAT).

TBA – Teatro do Bairro Alto | 8 Trabalhos PACAP 6
Eight projects that fit into the theatrical space are presented.
Projects of Bobby Brim (FR), Lorea Burge (UK/ES), Lucas Damiani (UY), Marcelo Castro (BR), Mariana Catalina Iris (UY), Rafaela Santos (PT), Vanessa Lonau (DE) e o coletivo de Camilla Morello (IT), Tarlie Lumby (UK) and Victor Lattaque (FR).

“This diversity of presentation contexts and the respective technical and logistical support of the teams of these cultural institutions seeks to meet the diversity and specificity of the proposals of each participant. Thus, the presentation formats depend exclusively on the creation process and the artistic intentions of each participant, which can either result in a show or performance or in a lecture, collective practice, installation, sound experience, guided tour, among many other options. PACAP’s public presentations are a moment of celebration, of expanding the relations of this temporary community and of collective reflection.”

Immersive Real Time Composition practice

August 28th to September 1st

Invited guest: Márcia Lança

This proposal will privilege the access to this tool through an immersive practice, mediated by a set of “performative devices” that provide different speeds, sensibilities, and intensities. These devices are, in many cases, extracted from performative experiences that João Fiadeiro has been developing over the years, where he used the theatrical apparatus (in the architectural and ideological sense) to investigate the limits and perceptual protocols of what we call “real” or “fiction”; “private” or “public”; “inside” or “outside”.

During this week the ambition will be to “grow into” this practice in order to access a quality of presence (and participation) dear to Real Time Composition: to understand how to relinquish control and orientation (indispensable to access what affects us) without losing rigor and lucidity (indispensable to share what affects us).

João Fiadeiro

João Fiadeiro (1965) is a Portuguese performer, choreographer, researcher, teacher and curator.

He belongs to the generation of artists who emerged in the late eighties in Portugal and gave rise to the New Portuguese Dance movement.

In the 90’ João Fiadeiro studied and practiced intensively Contact-Improvisation which led him to pursue and systematize his own research on improvisation under the designation of Real Time Composition. This research has led him to coordinate workshops in Masters and PhDs programs in several schools and universities throughout the world.

He has toured extensively throughout Europe, North America and South America with his solo and group works.

His path, whether as a choreographer or performer, as a researcher or curator, was centered on creating conditions for experimentation, laboratory practice and interdisciplinary intersection.

This activity was carried out both as part of the management of programming and artistic research projects, which included the Malaposta Cultural Center (1990-95), Espaço Ginjal (1995-1998), Lugar Comum (1999-2000), Espaço A Capital (2000-2002) and by Atelier Re.AL (2004-2019), as well as within the framework of his artistic practice, through creations and research workshops organized around Real Time Composition.

Atelier Re.AL was a structure that played a major role in the development of contemporary dance and transdisciplinary initiatives in Portugal.

On all these different meeting platforms, João Fiadeiro was always accompanied by artists who actively participated as creators, performers, researchers and programmers, making a decisive contribution to the existence of this project during 30 years of uninterrupted activity.

Márcia Lança

Márcia Lança

Márcia Lança was born in Beja and lives in Lisbon. In 2008 she founded VAGAR of which she is the artistic director.

She has worked as a choreographer and performer in a variety of collaborative settings. She moves in territories where the boundaries between the fictional and the real are tenuous and diffuse.

Her interest in the poetic materiality of concrete actions and tasks is at the heart of her creative processes. She is passionate about emerging collective compositions, thinking as action, and situated constructions. More info here

Introduction to the Real Time Composition practice

21 to 25 of August

It is a “practical” workshop, in the sense that it will be through experimentation that the attendees will access the premises and principles that guide this proposal, but the transmission will be made in a “frame by frame” mode, privileging the detail and the specificity of each tool-concept that sustains the doing-thinking of Real Time Composition.

In this regard there will be a special care and attention to the multiple dimensions that compose the body of work of this way of operating, isolating each of its valences through situated exercises (that underline certain aspects of its composition); the presentation and discussion of examples (via videos from the archive and works by other artist-researchers); and diagrams that translate through graphics the way Real Time Composition manifests itself.

O Protesto
de Eduarda Lima

The birds stopped singing. The cats no longer meowed. And the cows refused to give milk. The animals seemed to have made a pact…

Eduarda Lima’s debut album, O PROTESTO is a silent scream. From the tiny insects to the pets at home, from the virgin forest to our city’s river, silence echoes everywhere. Can you hear? This is a story and a call to unite today against pollution and waste, and to sow what others will later reap.

O Protesto, by Eduarda Lima, already has two editions. It was awarded with the following prizes:

  • NATIONAL ILLUSTRATION AWARD 2021 | Special Mention

PACAP 7
2024

Performing Arts Advanced Programme

Curated by Miguel Pereira and Nuno Lucas

From 7th of February 2024 to 23rd of July 2024

APPLICATIONS CLOSED

Until 31st of July 2023 | Extension of applications until September 10

Introduction

We consider that having time for studying is a privileged moment that allows us to experimentat and reflect upon artistic practises. Our intent is that this experience creates a space for sharing, learning, meeting and research, beeing a possibilty for new connections and creating new ties.

In this programme we intend to plunge into some core principles that guide our artistical pratice: working on performativity skills and stage presence, the urgency and discipline in the act of artistic creation, the relationship between entertainment and reflection, composition and dramaturgy as central axes in the construction of a work and the crossing between different artistic disciplines. We will be present throughout the duration of the all programme and at the same time we will count with the cumplicity of a wide range of artists, that have influenced our paths, and who will contribute with new perspectives and that will enrich this experience.

The focus of the programme is in the process and in the encounters that it can create, with a view to creating a space where artistic relationships expand and influence our identity. To promote a creative experience in an expanded period of time that allows each person to consolidate their needs and discover new impulses that will feed each future artistic project. Without undermining the importance of (a) public performances and the sharing of one’s work, as an inherent and necessary gesture of artistic practice, we want to nurture a space of reflection and experimentation, to reconsider the way we see what we do and how we do it.

Collaboration is one of the fundamental foundations of our work, as such we also intend to propose different forms of artistic collaboration, defying the need for the individual signature in favour of the place of the “other”. The one that challenges us, confronts and compels us to look at things from a different point of view. We will also promote the circularity of roles inside of an artistical process by consciously beeing able to play different roles in it (dramaturg, assistant, performer, producer, etc).

A programme that lasts six months is inevitably a compact format. We believe that this will be a countainer of possibilities that will reveal some of them during the duration of the course, but as well to create a resonance that goes beyond that time. Sometimes experiences are not immediately digested and because of that our priority is to create a community of action and thinking, one that defies the finite time that this programme allows.

Outline

  • Introduction: Forum Dança, Lisbon – 3 days
  • Residency: O Espaço do Tempo, Montemor-o-novo – 1 week
  • First block: Workshops and seminars with artists* – 4 weeks
  • First Research Period: 2 weeks

  • Second research period: 2 weeks
  • Descampado”: Undefined terrain – 1 week
  • Third Block: Workshops and seminars with artists* – 3 weeks
  • Third research period: – 4 weeks
  • Occupation: A moment to share and showcase work at TBA – Teatro do Bairro Alto and other spaces TBC – 2 weeks.

*Artists: Eleonora Fabião, João Fiadeiro, Jonathan Burrows, Joris Lacoste, Leticia Skrycky & Santiago Rodriguez Tricot, Loïc Touzé, Luara Raio & Acauã Shereya El_Bandide, Marcelo Evelin, Mark Tompkins (to be confirmed), Marlene Monteiro Freitas (to be confirmed), Pedro Paiva e Vera Mantero.

The programme begins with the participants’ welcoming at Forum Dança to introduce the cultural associations and spaces in Lisbon.

Afterwards there will be a weeklong residency at O Espaço do Tempo, in Montemor-o-Novo, to deepen the participants’ connection and solidify the group. Here, the participants will show each other their work and begin taking part in joint exercises, sharing experiences and motivation.

Once back in Lisbon, we will enter into an outline that alternates between approximately four weeks of workshops and seminars, followed by two weeks dedicated to research. We believe that this time dedicated to research not only helps digest and internalise the experiences that the participants have during the preceding workshops and seminars, but also acts as a space in which to explore and create from any questions that come up either during, or that may have come up before, the programme.

At the midpoint of the programme, we come to a point that we call DESCAMPADO: a period of time in which nothing is defined. A chance to go off course; the chance to create new, spontaneous work and connections. This idea of an open terrain filled with opportunity to explore is central to this moment in the course.

Before we get to the moment where we celebrate this whole experience, what we call the OCCUPATION, we still have four more weeks of research. During those four weeks, not only will we welcome several guests who make up the training programme as well as new accomplices, and we encourage the group to invite external people to the training.

The OCUPATION, which will take place in Teatro do Bairro Alto, is a moment for sharing far more than a showcase of the group’s final presentations. It’s a free space, open to all possible formats; from classes given by the group’s participants, conferences and demonstrations, the sharing of ideas, demonstrations of work both finished and unfinished, as well as proposing experiences to the public, etc.

A partnership with the Centre National de la Danse in Pantin (Paris, France) provides the possibility of creating an extension of PACAP 7 in October 2024 for the duration of CAMPING. This experience which lasts one week, is a place to encounter different artistic fields (prop design, visual arts, dance, theatre, etc) and from different parts of the world. Furthermore, it also allows, on the one hand, to come into contact with different types of approach, taking part in workshops, conferences, attending shows, and on the other, to be a platform for showcasing work and meetings that will provide new partnerships and future collaborations.

NOTE: All travel, lodging and food expenses associated with CAMPING are the participant’s own responsibility.

Introductory Workshop
to Sensitive Dance

With Francesca Bertozzi and Claude Coldy

20 to 24 of september 2023

An original somatic movement practice by Claude Coldy

This is a workshop for letting us explore the fundamentals of Sensitive Dance, where the relationship with one’s own body and with another person is the central element to the work we will do.

Sensitive Dance is a practice which, through conscious movement, leads to greater awareness of oneself, one’s own body, and one’s perceptions and emotions. It is a practice that invites you to listen deeply to your body’s messages, and which gives access to unexpected, spontaneous responses, refreshing them with new qualities and possibilities of movement.

This practice proposes to revisit some fundamental stages of evolution through a phylogenetic path, consciously reliving various stages of the process of verticalization of the human being, to rediscover the meaning and potential contained in the form and structure of our bodies. Breathing, seeing, sensitive listening, and touching are some of the practices of Sensitive Dance. They allow us to welcome what is born in the density of our bodies and make its authentic quality tangible.

We will be guided to care for and deepen the discovery of movement, to express the dance of the present moment, creating a new language through a dynamic dialogue between breathing, feeling, internal movement and external movement. Sensitive Dance is a fundamental training for building the presence of the performative body, integrating movement and creation practices. It is an invitation to orient oneself in a changing of one’s internal paradigm, in which the performing artist enters full realization of himself through his art. Inhabited in this way, the artistic creation becomes an intimate and timeless space that the artist shares with the public, and to whom he offers his vision and his emotions within the scenic space.

From Body
to Body

Interdisciplinary Movement Practices

With Gisela Dória

Monday | 19h00-20h30

“Do Corpo ao Corpo consists of regular classes based on the practice that Gisela Dória has been developing over many years of pedagogical and artistic experience. The work proposed here dialogues with a variety of techniques, of which Dance, Pilates, Gyrokinesis®, and various Somatic Education practices, including the Klein Technique™, stand out. More than a synthesis of these techniques, the classes promote the integration of different approaches in favor of a sensitivity that takes the uniqueness of each body as a starting point.

The goal is to develop awareness of the physical structure in order to make movement more functional and pleasurable, contributing to maintaining the body’s vitality. These classes thus open paths for self-observation, providing each person with the necessary resources for the continued (re)education of their movement.

Classes are open to adults of all ages, with no technical or physical prerequisites.”
